How SOPA Will Affect Filipinos

SOPA and PIPAare making its rounds all over the internet.
So what is SOPA and PIPA? Simple put, it’s an anti-piracy bill working through the US congress that gives its creators the power to censor the internet.

I won’t go into details on the bills. You can check the references below.

However, let me share my views on how it will affect Filipinos:

1. Filipino Bloggers whose sites rely heavily on Google Ads/Affiliate market may get shot down.

There are a lot of Filipinos making money online through Google Ads/Affiliate marketing. These sites may get censored if copyrighted materials are used such as product images, product descriptions, logos, etc.

If your site’s primary audience is based in US and your site gets censored, expect your profits to go down.

2. We won’t have any more future “Charice Pempenco’s” and “Maria Aragon’s”

Charice Pempenco and Maria Aragon became popular because of YouTube. They recorded themselves singing their favorite songs will all their heart. Because of that, they got discovered and now famous.

When SOPA and PIPA are in place, recording companies can ask YouTube to remove videos that contain their songs. Now, even a 10-year old girl singing Lady Gaga songs can be flagged for copyright infringement. So you won’t see any more videos like the one below:

3. No more pirated stuff (or just probably less conspicuous)

Let’s be honest, there are a lot of places where you can get pirated DVDs, software and music in the Philippines. Will SOPA and PIPA totally wipe out piracy? I don’t think so. It might lessen it, but people will find other ways to get what they want.

How remove unwanted spyware from your PC using Spybot Search and Destroy

One of the biggest problems of surfing the internet is that you don’t know if sites you’re visiting is installing spyware or malware into your PC. These spyware/malware not only slows down your surfing, but they also get personal information from your PC.

One way to remove these spyware is to use Spybot Search and Destroy. You can follow the How-To instructions below.

How to share many files using Dropbox

It’s so annoying to send many large files via email. It takes sooooo long! And it’s more annoying if your recipient accidentally deletes the email and asks you to send it again!

To avoid that, you can use Dropbox! Dropbox is like your online hard drive. When you sign up, you get 250GB of free space! But the most fantastic feature of Dropbox is that it’s so fast to upload files!

To share files, all you need to do is upload your files to a folder, then share the folder to your friends. No need to send file attachments again and again!

How to Send Large Files Using YouSendIt

Over the years, sizes of commonly used files (such as MS Office files) have increased. I remember about a decade ago that you can’t send 1MB file sizes via email.

Now, file sizes doesn’t seem to have a limit anymore but there are still limits on sending big files via email. Yahoo Mail, for example, doesn’t allow you to send file size more than 25MB (you may correct me on this).

So what do you do when you need to send a 50MB MS Power Point file? Use YouSendIt!

How to Remove Static Noise Using Audacity

When I attend seminars, I often bring my audio recorder. I record the seminar if the organizers allow it.

I record seminars so I can listen to them again when I get home. The problem is that my recorder also records static sounds. This is probably because the recorder picks up static noise from the auditorium speakers.

I’ve been looking for a way to remove the noise until I found a free tool called, Audacity. You can find instructions on how to remove noise below.

How to Make Online Forms Using Google Docs

Making online forms have become easy using Google Docs. This is especially useful when creating surveys or when creating a directory.

It’s a lot easier to distribute a survey this way since you just send out an email to the recipients. Since people are mostly online, it’s easier for them to fill this up that to use the traditional paper and pen. More importantly, all the responses are saved in a spreadsheet so there’s no need to encode entries.
